"APSATS" a non-profit organization providing professional training and compassionate support to partners affected by problematic sexual behavior and betrayal trauma. Home | Association for Partners of Sex Addicts Trauma Specialists
"AVR" Introduced in her book Help Her Heal (2019), stands for Acknowledge, Validate, and Reassure:
• A – Acknowledge (or Affirm): The partner in recovery must explicitly recognize the issue and the deep pain or destruction caused by their actions, linking their past behavior directly to their partner's present hurt without deflecting, defending, or disappearing.
• V – Validate: The partner must fully accept and validate the betrayed spouse's emotional reality and reactions (such as anger, grief, or fear), letting them know they have every right to feel that way given what happened.
• R – Reassure: The partner offers ongoing reassurance that they see the pain, understand the impact, and are consistently doing the work and making changes to rebuild a foundation of safety.
Carol emphasizes that AVR must be practiced consistently to help a betrayed partner feel safe enough to trust the recovery process, and she cautions that it should not be used as a hollow script if the person is still actively acting out (which turns it into gaslighting)
